Handmade Vintage Valentine

The Internet is laden with a plethora of vintage Valentine cards that were popular when I was a kid.  What a fantastic journey down memory lane.   Yup, we are talking way back in the 1950’s and early 1960’s!  What a difference from then and now.

Art class was may favorite class and holidays made it extra special with all the decorations we could make. Valentine Day included making a lot of hearts for the monthly mural on the bulletin board.  Everyone’s beautiful heart creation being pinned up.  Every month we would made something to proudly put up for the public eye.

The Valentine mail pocket the best project.  We would make two heart shapes and paste them together to create a large pocket.  Then we would used all sorts of things to decorate it. Construction paper cut out into more hearts, made into bouncy springs or fancy edging.  I remember taking those pretty white lace doilies, that go under cakes, cutting them into heart shapes or just using the fancy edging to bedeck the pocket.  Using crayons, our names very lettered bold and clear on the front so everyone knew it was your special Valentine Day mail pocket.   When everything was completed, time to set it out for all to see.  Using tape, we would attach the beautiful pocket onto the front of our desk.  The room looked so happy in anticipation of the party.  IWhat a fun filled day with all the preparation.

Sitting down at the kitchen table at home, a big box of Valentine cards was spread out in front.  Time to pick who would get which Valentine, sign them and put them in an envelope.  It was quite important that no one was left out and every card carefully picked.  A  pack of Valentines always had extras for your teacher.  She would have her own pocket set out in front of her desk to be filled by us.  The completed stack was then set by the backdoor ready to go on party day.

We had a party for every holiday back then.  Such good memories of such fun times.  On party day, we went around the room and put our Valentine cards into everyone’s Valentine pocket.  Our parents made cookies, cupcakes, candies, and punch which they brought in for us.  We ate snacks and opened all the Valentines while everyone was excitedly chattering away.  It was a great escape from the daily structure of classwork and sitting still for so long.  Those fidgety feet and arms were not noticed as everyone was allowed to move about and be social.   We all had a great pile of Valentines and a few extra goodies to take home.

Life certainly has changed from the 1950’s and 1960’s.  The punny humor and innocence seems to have been lost along the way somewhere.  Today it’s all capitalism with the fun removed.  I loved the creativity of making the decorations, enjoyed receiving handmade decorations from my children, and love it whenever I get handmade items from my grandchildren.  It loudly says I thought about you and spent some time for you and I love you.

I for one will not forget those days gone by and lightheartedly reminisce when when those dates roll around each year.  Crafting is for all occasions imprinting remarkable events forever.

With silliness, honesty and kindness I enjoy everyday.  Fun to you all on Valentine Day.  Make it special and craft something!
